Institut de médiation et d’arbitrage du Québec (IMAQ)

Founded in 1977, the Institut de médiation et d’arbitrage du Québec (IMAQ) is Quebec’s principal multidisciplinary association and accreditation body of specialists in mediation and arbitration.

At its core, its mission is focused on the promotion and development of participatory justice such as mediation, arbitration and other methods of alternative dispute resolution.

As confirmed by its accreditation rules, all certified members of IMAQ share the common values of integrity and competence and adhere to its Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct, which set out the standards of conduct and professional obligations of all members towards their clients and the public.

In 2008, IMAQ became affiliated with the ADR Institute of Canada, Inc. (ADRIC), which brings together mediation and arbitration organisations from six other regions in Canada. This partner plays a key role in putting in place and maintaining the highest professional qualification standards in alternative dispute resolution across the country (visit: www.adric.ca).

How We Work

Members of IMAQ comes from diverse professional backgrounds, including lawyers, psychologists, notaries, human resource consultants, engineers, architects, doctors and nurses, and represent over eighteen professional orders. This depth of multidisciplinary expertise contributes to IMAQ’s strength and gives rise to its committee-driven mode of operation.

IMAQ’s achievements are a direct reflection of the work carried out by its members in individual working groups, such as its corporate committees and its sector-specific round-tables, among others.

Our Activities

Committed to the ongoing professional development of its members and the education of the public, each year IMAQ offers conferences, symposiums and panel discussions on different themes related to the practice of ADR as well as various professional training seminars in ADR organized in collaboration with the University of Sherbrooke’s Law Faculty.

These activities allow participants to deepen their knowledge, to discover new approaches in the area and to tackle issues that may arise. They are prepared and given by IMAQ members as well as guest experts from all over the world.
